Faux Nestabilities with Juice/Can Lids

I've been back at my craft table lately and I've come up with a trick that's cheap and easy and will add a fun extra touch to your winter cards.
These round, embossed shapes were made by running juice and can lids through the Big Shot! I love the look of the metallic Nestabilities that emboss and cut beautiful shapes, but I don't have any yet. You know I love using things I have laying around the house too, so this is what I came up with!

To get a better idea of how to do it, watch this video. (If you are reading in a reader, click here and you'll be transported to YouTube.)

If for some reason, you can't see the video, here is the basic recipe:
First, put the white platform on the bottom,
Followed by shims, (if needed)
Embossing pad
Cardstock
Juice lid
Then top plate

*IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER MACHINE and you have the recipe for, let's say, the Cuttlebug, please feel free to share it in the comments and I will add it here. Thanks ;)

A friend that I told this idea to asked about square shaped embossing and I told her she would just have to look for a square soup can or settle for this other cheap and easy "faux nestie" trick: Add a layer of plain white cardstock that is 1/8" larger than your white focal point layer for a look that mimics embossing. It's simple, but it does add a little something to a card.

  1. Wow, you are so very clever!!! I would have never thought about this. I do have a question, can you used it in the cuttlebug as well, would you just use the embossing pads?

    Thanks so much,

    Lisa

  4. 1st time commenting on your blog, it's new to me. I've learned so much discovering all these blogs out there. This video on the enbossing with the can lids looks great. I also have a Big Shot and am definately going to try it out.
    Thanks for sharing!

  8. That's a good question, Lisa! I would think you could use the comparable plates/platforms on the Cuttlebug. Do they sell an embossing pad for the CB? You could probably use the Sizzix or Wizard one. If any other readers have a recipe for other machines, feel free to share ;)

  9. WOW look at you! Love this idea! I really like the square embossing look by using another sheet of white - how easy is that?! Thanks for the "how-to"!

  10. Hi - I own the Cuttlebug, this is how I got my circle impression.
    *A plate (white plate)
    * black embossing pad that I previously had from Sizzix (Or you can use plumber rubber so I hear from the hardware store)
    * card stock
    * fruit can lib (Libby's is what I had in my recycle bin)
    * C plate

    I experienced no tearing as long as you keep the lid as you would see it from the can. Do not flip it or it will tear
    I also did not have to spritz or use shims - because the C plate is thicker than the B plate.

  14. Great idea Julie, thanks for the instructions. Sometimes I'll make my own shape embossing templats too by gluing 10 diecut shapes together and then putting them in a similar sandwich. (Think 10 butterflies, or 10 flower shapes)

  17. What a wonderful idea. I have the CB instead of the Big Shot but may just have to get the Big Shot too. I don't think the CB could do this. Thank you@
